The season begins for the Giants one week from today. Looking back over spring training I do not believe the club is ready. The team they field next Friday in Arizona will not be the same as the one that plays on June 1st..
At the start of spring the Giants envisioned the following starters:
1b - Huff Has had an ok spring; not great looks like a .260 hitter
2b - Sanchez Still has not recovered from injuries and may never play again
3b - Sandoval Came around after a few weight issues and no winter baseball
ss - Crawford Has done a good job to keep his spot in the lineup
lf - Cabrera Started great and then cooled but still a very good spring
cf - Pagan And I thought Rowand was bad!
rf - Schierholtz Lots of injuries and lack of production keeps us guessing
c - Posey He can still hit. He's back and they need him.
The tragedy is that this will probably be the starters next Friday except that Burriss who has done a very good job this spring will replace Sanchez.
The chances of the Giants with their current line-up of out scoring last years team look slim. Remember it was in September with a healthy Beltran that the Giants began to score more runs to make the disastrous run producing numbers look a littler better.

Basketball Comments
Warriors - Congratulations to the Warriors for their trade for Andrew Bogut consider one of the better centers in the NBA. It's a risk but opportunities are few in the NBA and this one they could not pass up if they want to be considered a serious contender for an NBA title.
What I Love About College Basketball -
1) I was watching the USC - UCLA Pac 12 tournament game and with one second to go in the half the Trojans miss a lay up and UCLA rebounds and calls time out. The officials huddle by the scorekeeper for it seems minutes to determine the exact time left on the clock. Then the Bruins pass the ball in and throw a desperation 80 foot prayer down court. Give me a break!
2) Committing a foul in basketball use to be a penalty. Now it is a reward. If you haven't figure that one out yet you don't understand the game.
3) Don't you just love the last minute of the games taking about 15 minutes with all the time outs and foul shots. I guess that excites people, not me!
Notes on the NCAA Tourney
1) Since I was sick I slept through the NCAA Selection Show on TV. Once I was awake I printed the Bracket and the first thing I saw was USF/California in a 'play in game' Could it be that the Dons got at large bid to play the Golden Bears at the Cow Palace? Then I came to my senses and discovered it was the USF Bulls who routed the Bears in Dayton before a large groups of fans that wanted to take a 'flier' on the Stock Market.
2) The tourney is noted for all the upsets that make it exciting with all those #12 teams beating the #5's. But in the South, West and East Regions three out of the top four made it to the sweet 16 and in the Midwest 2 out of 4. Yes Duke lost but they keep playing on their reputation of ten years ago.
3) The upsets and close games do make for excitement but the quality of play leaves something to be desired. Physical errors I understand but the mental errors that I observed by St Mary's, Notre Dame and Lehigh in the couple games I watched were just unexcusable.
4) I would fire the Notre Dame coach for playing not to lose instead of to win against Xavier and for using a 'put me to sleep' offense that through his team all out of rhythm

Spring Training
The Sweeney family has been sick for the past three weeks so we have not had the energy to comment on the Giants. We are now near recovery and have summarized are thoughts on the team as they enter the closing phases of spring training.
Still Gold - Lincecum, Cain and Bumgarner
Most Disappointing - Connor Gillaspie
Most Pampered - Audrey Huff
Biggest Liars - Bochey and Sabean
Big Headache - Bianco is better than Pagan
A Winner - Melky Cabera
Lost Giant - Angel Villalonce
Surprise Batting Average - Emanuel Burris
Big Concern - Freddy Sanchez
Some Concern - Brian Wilson and Buster Posey
Done Enough - Crawford to start at shortstop
The Future - The Giants power hitting catchers.
Question - Why do the same Giants draft outfielders that bunt all the time?
Most Likely to Get Screwed - Belt
Do We Dare Ask? Sandoval is not hitting his weight this spring. Problem?
Attendance in Arizona over the past four days has been tremendous. Scottsdale must be really jumping. The one big surprise is that the Angels -Dodgers game at Glendale outdrew the Padres - Giants in Scottsdale by nearly 3,000 fans Sunday. It was raining at both parks but is is still a big upset.
